Episode 4

Does Sola Scriptura Imply an Appeal to Authority?

Published on: 20th August, 2024

Still in Season 2, Joshua Noel discusses the Appeal to Authority fallacy and the many ways this fallacy makes its way into Church debates today. Appeals to the pope's authority, the sole authority of Scripture, and to "the science" can all be arguments that rely on the Appeal to Authority.

.

What is an example of authority fallacy? What is appeal to valid authority? How do you spot an appeal to authority? What is the appeal to authority? Is quoting the Bible an appeal to authority? What is the appeal to the Bible fallacy? Is the pope a religious authority?

.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Recognize an argument using an appeal to authority
  • Deconstruct the arguments for Biblical inerrancy and sola scriptura
  • Challenge what sources we use to understand the Bible
  • Explore how to trust authorities without relying on them alone

.
